The Pope and the Spirit of Antichrist
Tuesday, February 26, 2013
We know the comparison of the pope to the Antichrist might shock some readers, but it’s not a statement we make lightly. In fact, the spirit of Antichrist isn’t limited just to the Antichrist predicted in Revelation but applies to anyone who positions himself against or in place of Christ.
To help give you more insight into what God’s Word says about the spirit of Antichrist, we’d like to recommend the following teaching from John MacArthur.
Marks of a True Believer
“Christians and Antichrists, Part 1”
“Christians and Antichrists, Part 2”
“Christians and Antichrists, Part 3”

If we dismiss, reinterpret, or take God's word lightly, we show that we do not know God (1 John 4:6). Anyone who rejects what God's word says, rejects Christ (John 1:14).

English Standard Version (ESV)
32 And whoever speaks a word against the Son of Man will be forgiven, but whoever speaks against the Holy Spirit will not be forgiven, either in this age or in the age to come.
A Tree Is Known by Its Fruit
33 “Either make the tree good and its fruit good, or make the tree bad and its fruit bad, for the tree is known by its fruit. 34 You brood of vipers! How can you speak good, when you are evil? For out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaks.

The Lord warned us there would be many coming in His Name saying “’I am the Christ’ and will mislead many” (Matt 24:5). He could not have meant there would be all sorts of people going around verbalizing that they are Jesus Christ. That wouldn’t mislead many at all. Rather, it is by identity theft. Crafty identity thieves pit themselves against the people they violate, becoming their counterfeits in an attempt to steal from them. They use an array of deceptive, indirect methods to convince others they are the person whose identity they have assumed. So they are “anti” who they claim to be. The catholic religion is antichrist because it attempts to steal Christ’s True identity as our Mediator (1 Tim 2:5) by elevating priests who falsely assume that position, and Mary who is “prayed” to as such. They attempt to steal Christ’s rightful position as the One worthy of worship (Rev 5) by making the pope and all his worldly “glory” the focal point, therefore diverting worship away from Christ and to the pope. Many are misled by this ultimate identity theft. It is absolutely satanic. It is the spirit of the antichrist (1 John 4:3). Catholics are not alone. Charismatics undermine the sole Authority of God’s Word by overriding it with random “revelations” and “special messages from God”. It’s an unwitting attempt to usurp the authority of Christ. It is the spirit of the antichrist – identity theft of The One True Lord. Preachers set up as the ruling hierarchy in their local church are yet another example. Competing with Christ for control of the church they subtly attempt to rob Him of His rightful position as Head of it. It’s identity theft. It’s the spirit of the antichrist. Instead of following Christ in submission, pastors like this take the position of supreme rule for themselves and demand the flock to follow them unconditionally instead of Christ, all the while, using His Name to do it. May we all be aware of the many antichrists that are in the world today (1 John 2:18) (1 John 4:3).
