Gold, frankincense, and myrrh—those are perhaps the three most famous Christmas gifts ever given, for one historic reason. Matthew 2:11 records their delivery to Christ in His childhood by wise men from the East. And all three gifts have been memorialized by the many nativity scenes featuring them each Christmas.  

But what about the next time Jesus comes? In his sermon “The Believer’s Gift to Christ,” John MacArthur considers the gifts the Bible says the Lord wants from us—His people—when He comes again in glory.

We know what the gifts were the first time He came. We know that the wise men brought gold, frankincense and myrrh. They brought them because they felt that they were appropriate gifts, suitable for a king. Even though He received a cross and not a throne, nonetheless He was a King, and next time He comes back there will be a throne—the throne of the whole world. So what gifts are appropriate for the King to be given by His people? Clearly He’s not going to expect anything tangible, for He will have entered into His full glory—His humiliation past, He will have received all that belongs to Him originally and eternally. So there will be nothing material that we could give to Him. He wants something far different than that. In fact, I’m convinced there are four gifts that the Lord would want from us next time He comes.

John’s message reveals what those gifts are. And while they exceed even the luxury items brought by the wise men, “The Believer’s Gift to Christ” explains how all four are well within the reach of every true Christian.
