La palabra “apostasía” viene de la palabra griega apostasia, que se traduce “decaer” en 2 Tesalonicenses 2:3. La palabra es relacionada a la palabra griega para “divorcio”.

Apóstatas son aquellos quienes decaen de la fe verdadera, abandonando lo que ellos antes profesaban creer. El término describe a aquellos que son tan deficientes como para ponerlos fuera del verdadero cristianismo. Por ejemplo, una denominación liberal que niega la autoridad de las Escrituras o la deidad de Cristo es una denominación apóstata.

Los cristianos verdaderos no apostatan. Aquellos que caen en la apostasía, demuestran que su fe nunca fue verdadera desde un principio (1 Juan 2:19).
